EndNote is a research management tool that allows you to import, organize and store the citations you find using research databases and library catalogs, and integrates with Word to format citations and bibliographies. It is available in both desktop and web-based versions.

EndNote Basic vs. EndNote Desktop

The full version of EndNote, called EndNote Desktop, is a desktop-based software package, compatible with both Macs and PCs, with unlimited storage for references and attachments, the ability to view and annotate full-text PDFs in-program, and to share and collaborate with others. It can be used in conjunction with the online version to access your references from any computer. The EndNote Cite-While-You-Write plugin, available for Microsoft Word and Apple Pages, can be downloaded to help you format citations and bibliographies for your scholarly writing.

EndNote Basic is a limited, web-based version of EndNote. Storage is limited to 50,000 references and 2GB of attachments. PDFs cannot be viewed or annotated in-program and collaboration capabilities are limited. The EndNote Cite-While-You-Write program for Word and Pages is available for download.
